What is AP?

Advanced Placement (AP) is administered by The College Board, the same organization that administers the SAT.

Unlike IB, which is designed to be an integrated program, AP is designed to be a series of single course entities. A student can register for and take any AP Exam without having taken the course first.

AP Exams are typically made up of multiple choice response and essay questions, whereas IB Exams never have multiple choice questions and are always written (even in math).

Most universities give some recognition for students who take an AP class and pass the exam, though requirements vary widely. For example, though a 3 is traditionally considered "passing," may schools require a higher score to earn credit, some schools only offer credit for particular tests, and some do not offer credit for any AP exam. Check the policies for any college you may apply for.

At VHS, some courses give students the option of taking an AP exam and/or an IB exam.
